Taiwan congratulates French President Emmanuel Macron on reelection

Taipei, April 25 (CNA) The Taiwan government sent a congratulatory message Monday to French President Emmanuel Macron on his reelection to a second term and expressed a hope for deeper bilateral relations.

The message was conveyed to Macron, his government and people via the Taiwan representative office in Paris, after the official results of France's presidential runoff election on Sunday were announced, according to a press release by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA).

In the press release, MOFA said Taiwan was ready to deepen its cooperation with the French government so as to safeguard peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region and across the Taiwan Strait and contribute to rules-based international democratic order.

On Sunday, Macron became the first French president in 20 years to win a second term, gaining 58.55 percent of the votes, while his challenger Marine Le Pen of the far-right National Rally party got 41.45 percent, according to the election results released by French authorities.

MOFA said that in the congratulatory message to Macron, Taiwan expressed the hope that it could continue to deepen its relations with France, as it has been doing since Macron first took office as president in 2017.

Over the years, MOFA said, Taipei and Paris have enjoyed cordial relations under the shared universal values of freedom, democracy and human rights.

After Macron was first elected president in 2017, Taiwan opened a second representative office in France, in Aix-en-Provence, MOFA said, adding that the first office was in Paris.

The French government, in its Indo-Pacific strategy report earlier this year, named Taiwan as one of its key partners in the region, MOFA noted.

In 2021, the upper and lower houses of the French Parliament passed several Taiwan-friendly resolutions and sent delegations to visit Taiwan, MOFA said.

Over the years, Taiwan's representative to France Francois Wu (吳志中) has being invited several times to attend parliamentarian hearings in Paris, MOFA said.
